Why reading a book is better than watching TV?
When you are watching TV or reading a book, you are neither conversing with others nor conversing to yourself. You are just either listening or watching others converse. This is called as Subtle Conversation. Listening to radio is also an example of subtle conversation.
While meditating, sometimes conversations of other people keep playing in your head. By being a listener you are effectively participating in that chat That is an example of Subtle Conversation too.
Even though they both are subtle conversations, while watching TV your mind starts processing what are all you are watching. When your mind do so, your minds restlessness increases and you will start flipping through the channel. Reading a book is more useful form of subtle conversation, because while reading your mind listens more than processing and directly engaging in an act of learning.
